Real Wedding: Molly + Donovan

Remember these two hipsters? Yep, well Molly & Donovan tied the knot this past June in the beautiful, and very warm Palm Springs. They chose the O'Donnell Golf Club for the lovely outdoor setting against the San Jacinto Mountain range.

The summer wedding went beautifully - a ceremony filled with meaningful vows paired with a rockin' fun reception under the stars. Their guests ate, drank and danced the night away with the newlyweds.

Donovan's family owns the most amazing pizza and Italian restaurant in the desert, which catered the most delicious dinner that night. The party never stopped, and the amount of love and friends these two have is certainly incredible. The best part of their wedding was that it was truly about them, and their commitment to marriage. Simple, sweet and loads of fun.

M&D - love to you both and enjoy the new adventures as newlyweds. We adore you - muah!

The Floral Lab produced THE coolest terrarium's inside large mason jars. Pair that with a few billy balls and astilbe and you've got a party! Dear Darling created hand made table numbers that made a sweet touch to each table. Very natural, simple and perfect.

Sweet & Saucy provided the show stopping, out-of-this-world desserts. Always, always the right choice for any wedding.

Today I'm sharing my favorite wedding. It's my own. Two years ago I said, "I do", to the sweetest, most handsome man in the world and became Ashlyn Carter.

Every detail was better in person than I could have imagined. Perfectly whimsical, sweet and a fabulous celebration with 250 of our friends and family members. Stephanie Fay is a dear friend of mine, and she was able to capture our day so beautifully.

After visiting the McCormick Home Ranch in Camarillo, CA, I knew right away it had to be the venue. The colonial style home sits on several acres of ranch land and has beautiful gardens, a big green barn, and the front of the house reminds me of the home in Father of the Bride - my absolute favorite movie growing up.

My favorite moment of the wedding was walking down the aisle to see my love for the first time. I head back tears the entire way down the aisle. The ceremony was very personal to us and we wrote our own vows, which I recommend to every couple!

We danced our first dance to Coldplay, had the most delicious food and mashed potato martini bar, shed many many tears of joy, and sat in awe in the wonderful glow of the evening.

To my sweet husband - thank you for loving me unconditionally, being my hero, best friend and faithful supporter.

Real Wedding: Nicole + Dan vol.2

One of our favorite weddings to date had to be shared in two parts. Enjoy more of the peachy details we designed for Nicole + Dan's big day at Condors Nest Ranch, captured by Katie Neal Photography.

Guests dined outdoors at the Ranch and were served gourmet BBQ fixings, while seated a elegant tables. Beautiful mix-matched china at each placesetting is the only way to eat BBQ at a wedding. The parallel between class and rustic elegance was perfection!

This escort card wall was a vision + originally inspired from an ad in an interior design magazine. We decided to build Nicole her very own wall of vintage plates for the escort card set up. It turned out perfectly and was a stunning statement of peach and mint green with the reception as the backdrop. Dear Darling did all the calligraphy for the wedding.

Floating gold lotus flowers filled the pool...it was a lovely touch!

After sunset, the ranch turned into a beautiful, romantic lit scene straight out of a movie. The market lighting and hundreds of candles made for a beautiful sight! The ceremony area was transformed into an after dinner hay lounge complete with custom made linens, gold frames which served as trays to candies - just in time for evening cocktails and cigars. The lounge turned out adorable!

Nicole + Dan, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for trusting C&C with every aspect and detail of the day. We enjoyed every minute of it all plus the final product was incredible! Congrats on your marriage and we wish you the best!!

Nicole is one of those brides who has it all together. She is wonderfully creative, organized, and so on top of it all. She was well on her way to having a beautiful wedding at Condors Nest Ranch when we got a call from her. She needed help pulling her vision together in a cohesive look and hired us to do all the design and styling of the entire day. What could be better than that & at one of our very favorite venues!

We couldn't have been more thrilled! Nicole loved the rustic ranch, but also wanted their wedding to have elegance & class. We quickly came up with some ideas to bring the two worlds together, and I must say -the end result was breathtakingly lovely.

The color scheme for their summer wedding was a dusty pink, peach, cream, mint green and golds. Lynn Lucente blew us away with her floral design. The flowers were simply stunning. We designed two various tablescaples, using both round and banquet tables with a variety of high and low centerpieces. We found an eclectic mix of centerpiece containers ranging from warm peach hues, shabby chic cream, and gold.

How tender is their first look? I love how sweet it is.

Nicole knew what she was doing hiring Katie Neal Photography. WOW, does she make us look GOOD. : )Her use of lighting is amazing.. just wait until you see more of the wedding details coming next week!

Summertime Wedding Inspiration

We had the absolute privilege to work with Jessica Claire again this year. I'm telling you, everything she touches is golden. Her photography is absolutely stunning and makes our design look that much better. Thank you Jessica for allowing us to assist in your workshop!

Because the workshop was in June, the start of summer and in this rustic park - we wanted the theme of the shoot to reflect the surroundings. The park felt very camplike - so we started there. We were inspired by camping, all things summer, gingham, popsicles, fireflies, fun colors, rope and various textures.

Ask anyone - I was obsessed with using these darn popsicles. They were packed in an ice chest, and I prayed they would last. As you can see, just barely. :)

Hannah with Modern Bouquet always does an incredible job bringing our vision to reality. The whimsical florals were such an elegant touch to the table. She also hand made a rustic chandelier for the ceremony area that was hung from an arch, that came from Found Rentals.

Jeni from Found provided an amazing collection of furniture for the shoot. She is incredible to work with and has such a fantastic selection of pieces at her vintage rental warehouse.

Anytime we get the chance to create a an element of design that may be hung over a tablescape – we take advantage! We attached various styles of rope to the Oak Tree, along with the left over fabric to create an eclectic and fun looking rope chandelier.

Our goal was to take the rustic atmosphere & theme but create an elegant space. We love the idea of mixing textures and patterns. Gingham and vintage floral prints began to paint a vision. We made a custom peach and tangerine floral printed table runner and navy gingham napkins. Posh Paperie created adorable place card flags that were secured in fresh pieces of summer fruit – cantaloupe!

All the wedding signs were a beautiful combination of the two patterns. In order to off set the rustic environment, we used navy blue fine china, and then spray painted plastic plates as homemade chargers. A less expensive way to add color and another fun element to your table.

We really love summer fruit - especially cantelope. It played into the table decor and the color was the perfect 'pop'!

A small campfire area made up of various lanterns was created & included benches, a hammock, peanuts to snack on and a even a game of Bingo.

Melody, from Sweet & Saucy Shop created a cake table with 3 alternating sizes of cake, two of which had toasted marshmallow frosting! We designed a hand dyed tulle curtain backdrop for our cake table. The lighting created a beautiful focal point.

Katie and Ryan Scott are a real life couple. In fact, she too is a fantastic photographer. They were the perfect models, and so very lovely!

Not only to I love this inspiration board made by Snippet and Ink, but I love that Kathryn used one of our photos from our peach inspired photo shoot. This board is a perfect blend of peach and warm orange tones, coupled with a striking navy blue. What a beautiful, fall color palette this would be! The perfect blend between warm & fresh!

Back to Basics: Wedding Cake

Wedding dessert trends are all over the board these days. Anything goes. That's what we tell the bride who wants to do pie instead of cake, small cakes instead of one large, and the ever so fabulous dessert bar with homemade treats.

However we're finding it refreshing when a bride gets 'back to the basics', and chooses a wedding cake. "Just ONE wedding cake?!" you might ask? Yep, just one. One large and beautiful wedding cake.

We're getting back to the basics today with the traditional wedding cake. And if you notice...singular wedding cakes can be fun too. The shape, size and design of your cake can be creative, and even be a show stopper!

Engaged: Molly & Donovan...& Dear Darling.

Donovan and Molly have been personal friends of ours for a long time now. They are sweet, kind, fun and full of so much life and energy! Their Palm Springs Wedding is going to be off the charts HIP. We had the opportunity to be part of an interview for Antoinette at Fab Blog and share a bit about who we are, what trends we're loving...and what trends we're not! ;) You also might learn a little bit more about how we got started and why we love what we do...

Talk about how the two of you became what we know now as Carter & Cook Event Co. How we met: I am from Point Loma {San Diego, CA} and Ashlyn is from Ventura, CA. It’s funny, we actually switched cities for college, as I moved up to Santa Barbara to attend Westmont College and she moved down here to go to Point Loma Nazarene University {both private, Christian schools}. After graduation, I moved home and got married. After my wedding, I knew I wanted to somehow be involved in planning weddings and events. I ended up working for a corporate event planning company {Vision Event Productions}, where I met Ashlyn. I learned so much during my time there. It was definitely invaluable, as I gained event experience and met my future business partner! Ashlyn and I began carpooling to work, and in that half hour commute {each way} we began discussing our dreams of having our own company and doing private events on a much more personal level. And so, Carter & Cook Event Company was born!

Ashlyn was actually planning her wedding at the time, so we spent hours on wedding blogs and other coordinators’ sites, getting inspiration as well as an idea of what our competition looked like. We met with Karrie of Posh Paperie and began brainstorming what our brand would look like. We also talked with an attorney to get informed on exactly what we needed to do on the legal end, and set up our business license… even before we had our first wedding booked!

Tell us about your organizational +/or creative process, from the moment you meet with a client for the first time to the completion of their event. The creative process really begins the moment we meet a new bride and groom. We love how each couple is completely unique, even though they all say they want similar things, like the “Anthropologie, vintage” inspired wedding. We love finding out what’s important to the couple and what distinguishes them from the next couple. This is how we come up with their theme/feel for their wedding day. Once we decide to go in a certain direction, it’s our job to assist our couples in staying on track when it comes to décor, budget and time! The organizational process also starts immediately. We are big fans of lists and time lines. {Hopefully our brides are too because we’re always sending them their way!} I don’t think it’s normal for someone to be creative and organized! So Ashlyn and I really take pride in our God-given talents!

Where do you find inspiration for...

...Yourselves? As far as our business goes, Ashlyn and I really admire a few planners that have been in the business for years. One that always comes up is Mindy Weiss. We would love to one day have a super successful, renowned company. And we’d love to meet Mindy someday! Both Ashlyn and I have inspiring parents who have encouraged us to go for our dreams. They’ve also been great examples of what hard work looks like.

...Your clients? We are really inspired by interior design. I love looking at magazines and blogs such as apartmenttherapy.com and designsponge.com to get ideas for event décor. Also our clients are very inspiring. They normally are pretty good at starting our creativeness to flow.

...Events? {same as above! All of our events are for a lovely clients.}

What trends are you loving right now? Are there any that you wish would disappear? What ideas do you foresee as staples for future weddings? The trend we love the most is that anything goes these days. It is enjoyable seeing how each client and event is completely different. At one of our weddings in March, the groom created a hot air balloon piñata for his darling bride. He blind folded her in front of all their guests, spun her around and watched her attack the piñata. It was great! It’s all about the details… and making them personal to each couple.

There are a few trends that we are a little tired of… anything to do with birds: birdcages, nests, nests with eggs… you get the picture! I’d like to see the traditional, single wedding cake make a comeback, rather than cupcakes. WE see photo booths all the time. They’re fun, but not uncommon anymore. Ashlyn just mentioned the other day she wouldn’t be sad if she never sees another sparkler send off. But at the end of the day, it’s up to our clients and what they want at their wedding. If a bride’s always dreamed of having a bird themed wedding or sparklers for her send off, that’s what she’s going to get. Of course we make suggestions, but the bride and groom make the final decision.

What are some tips/tricks that you can share that allowed well-designed elements to really pop in photographs? The easiest way to get beautiful, crisp photographs is to hire a talented, professional photographer! Ashlyn and I cannot stress this enough to our couples. You can spend all the money you want on flowers and décor or your wedding dress, but if you do not hire a good photographer you won’t have beautiful pictures to remember all of your wedding day details. Some tips that help well-designed elements pop in photographs are: Choose a color palette wisely! Whether you choose a palette with multi-bright colors or a muted palette, make sure you have at least one color that will stand out and make a statement. Also, using different textures help photographs pop. We like finding place mats or napkins that have texture to them. They really add something special to the tables.

Have you ever dealt with a ‘Bridezilla’ client? How do you deal with sticky situations? Honestly and thankfully no! We’ve never had a Bridezilla! We are very fortunate in that department. Of course we’ve had our fair share of minor sticky situations. But every planner knows sometimes things don’t go as planned. Fortunately, we are excellent at thinking on our feet, and can always figure out a way to solve any issues that come our way!

Knowing what you know now, if you could re-plan your own weddings, what would you do-over or incorporate? Oh man! Where to begin?! I cannot speak for Ashlyn, but I would definitely do a few things differently. First off, I would not spend as much money {sorry dad!}. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my wedding. But I have so much more wedding knowledge now than I did then, and know so many more vendors! I was married in a large church and the reception was in a beautiful ballroom overlooking the Pacific Ocean {at Hotel Del Coronado}. Today I would probably have a backyard or garden wedding with peonies galore and a smaller guest list!

Real Wedding: Julie + Brad

Julie & Brad were married on a lovely April evening, held at The Darlington House in Ja Lolla. It was the perfect setting for their intimate, garden wedding. The thought and care that went into planning this wedding was so sweet.

Julie did such an incredible job with all the details and personal touches for their special day. She hand made these adorable boutonnieres for the groomsman. They were so adorable, and I think she should definitely start a side business, don't you think? :)

Julie had been collecting hankies for years, and was finally able to put them to use! She made a beautiful handkerchief garland to line the aisle. It was certainly a special touch!

Check out those huge bouquets! Modern Bouquet did a absolutely stunning job on the wildflower bouquets!

Brad, looking GQ. I've never seen a groom so happy on his big day. It was darling!

That face. He was such a fun, and adorable little ring bearer...and certainly took his job seriouslly. So cute. : )

Miles Mcpherson did a great job marrying Brad & Julie. The ceremony was intimate, sweet and charming. Their personal vows made us tear up, they were so sweet! We love when the bride and groom write their own vows! It is so meaningful.

The reception details were endless! Each table had a variety of tins, and glass holding the most colorful flowers! They decided to have a cake table, and had Nothing Bundt Cakes for dessert. By far some of the BEST cake we've ever tasted. Guests enjoyed choosing from the variety of flavors.

Mr. & Mrs. Wilson...congratulations!!! We were so thankful to share in your big day. It was such a special journey to be a part of, and we wish you two the best! I know the Lord will do big things through your genuine hearts and love for one another, and others.

Sneak Peek: Julie + Brad

I was preparing a Real Wedding blog post for a very special couple, Brad + Julie, when this particular photo caught my eye. Among the hundreds of photos I was pouring through, this is the one I loved most. Something about it is completely magical in a perfect, spiritual sort of way. It's the lighting and the excitement you can feel, just moments following their ceremony.

And then I realized why I love this photo so much. It is a perfect picture of their love. It is pure and sweet, real and unique, and after time spent with these two, it makes me want to run home and love my own hunny just that much more.

Julie and Brad, keep that kind of love forever and ever. Your love and respect for one another is beautiful & contagious.

Real Wedding: Aimee + Colin vol. II

It was so much fun working with Aimee to come up the theme and fun details for their rustic ranch wedding. She somewhat combined aspects from these two shoots, into one for her special day. Fresh peaches, canned peaches, old shutters, homemade table runners, and wildflowers lined the long banquet tables. All place settings were set with vintage silverware, and mix matched china. It was so beautiful...I have to include so many photos to show the variation of the tables!

On the corner of every gold chivari chair was a handmade place card with the guests name. No detail went unnoticed! The variety of color everywhere was completely stunning! The Floral Lab did such a beautiful job with the variety of flowers.

They made cute jars of homemade peach jam for each guest to take home! During the cocktail hour, guests sipped Shirley Temples or Sweet Tea out of mason jars with homemade "S" stir sticks.They were able to explored the ranch, play lawn games, and have their photo taken in a fun outdoor photo booth and chalkboard sign. Aimee added a orange sweater to her outfit after the wedding, and it was such a fun touch!

In lieu of a guest book, Aimee and Colin brought a large slap of wood for guests to sign, and Aimee will turn that into a coat rack with darling Anthropologie knobs. I loved this idea, and it is a fun memento to keep in their new house for years to come.

In cased you missed the trailer 4120 Weddings did, here it is again. I've watched it several times now, and love everything about it. Those guys sure have talent!

The dessert table gave off a ranch vibe with the fresh peach and apple pies, homemade cookies, and a cake! I love this last photo, as it completely reveals their spunky personalities!

Real Wedding: Aimee + Colin vol. I

Aimee + Colin's wedding was beyond words, beautiful. Miss Aimee was one of those dream brides to work with. The details were endless, and the amount of love that these two poured into their day was perfection. They are the type of couple that everyone wants to be around because their joy and outlook on life is FUN and pure. Together, it's just that much better.

Condor's Nest Ranch was the perfect location for their weekend celebration! The venue is insanely cool with tractors, farm animals, a decked out green house, sprawling green hills for miles and miles....A perfect place for Aimee + Colin to be married.

It was so difficult to choose photos for a blog post, so these two features will be jam packed with goodness from Colleen Sherman Photography. She's pretty much incredible!

There is something stunning about these two photos, above and below. Aimee is an incredibly beautiful woman, and on her wedding day, she glowed x10000.

Could the bridesmaids be ANY cuter? Nope. They wore Anthropologie dresses, yellow shoes, and their handmade sashes were each a different patterned color, and coordinated with the guys homemade boutonnieres. Ad-orable.

One of THE coolest parts of their wedding...the wood structure made out of old wood & vintage windows. It was incredible and framed their ceremony backdrop perfectly. Colin and his Dad made this THEMSELVES. Talk about a DIY groom!

Exquisite Weddings Magazine: Rustic Chic Tablescape

We're so very excited to finally share some of the photos from our Exquisite Weddings shoot we did back in December. The photographer, Terri Rippee did such a beautiful job capturing the rustic, chic tablescape at the lovely Rancho Valencia.

We wanted a table that was rustic, chic, soft and romantic. Our main focus to create our vision was designing a wood table top with benches for seating. The table top was made up of lots of old pieces of wood, fit together to create a rustic look. The linens were made up of a variety cream and white damasks, lace, and crochet linen. We used mercury glass candle holders, and silver candlesticks to add a pop of fancy shine over the wood table top.

The flowers were the perfect blend of wildflowers and greenery for the outdoor setting. The Floral Lab always does a fantastic job!

This cake! Melody from Sweet and Saucy made a stunning cake that matched our design to a T! She used beautiful lace trip, and topped the cake with a pod and balsa wood flower. So, so cute.

The menus were so cute! We found old books at local antique stores and tore the covers off. Love at First Invite designed all the adorable paper and we glued the menus on top of the book covers. It was a touch of "old" and brought color to the table.

The china, and stemware are from Anthropologie. I love the stone colored cermaic plates paired with the delicate lace stemware. It was beautiful together!

The table had an outdoor, fancy 'picnic' sort of vibe with the bench seating. It is perfect for the couple who loves casual elegance. For a bit of nostalgia, we placed cotton candy in the mint green bowls on each persons place setting.

The recepie for our "Lovely Lavendar" cocktail can be found in a copy of the latest issue of EW Mag.

Again, we are so very thankful and excited to see this vision come to life..in print! Thank you to all of the other people who helped make this table amazing.

Real Wedding: Liz & Rich Part II

Liz & Rich's wedding ooozzzed with fabulousness. The amount of time they spent on the details definitely shows. We love couples who care about the details as much as us! We cannot take much creative credit for this darling wedding...it was all these two! I just love this photo. Did you get a look at Rich's homemade, Up, Up, Up and Away themed pinata?!

Liz took a tiny little hit, barely breaking a sweat - and then there was Rich. He didn't hold back! Inside the pinata was tons of toothpaste, floss and toothbrushes, all of which, timely followed the dessert and sweets buffet table. It was also a heartfelt personal touch in honor of Liz's grandfather and former dentist they all call, "Doc."

The 'Pop' bar was such a hit. All the guests enjoyed the brightly colored soda pop and vintage spiraled drinking straws.

A Polaroid camera station was set up for guests to have a photo snapped of themselves, and then leave a memo in the guest book.

The wildflowers that filled the Darlington House were beyond adorable. Old glass vases, bottles, and containers were used on the various tables. Modern Bouquet did such a beautiful job capturing Liz's vision.

The bride and groom sure love their sweets! They had a candy buffet filled to the brim with a variety of candies including homemade toffee [courtesy of the mother of the groom]. The sweets buffet was totally decked out in Red Velvet cupcakes, colorful hot air balloon cookies, and the father of the brides famous chocolate chip cookies. The small cake was adorned with darling bride & groom birds, which yes, Rich made himself!!

The fabric colored pendants were also made by the couple and covered the Darlington House grounds. They were such a colorful addition to the naturally beautiful property and added some fun 'spunk'!

The ceremony was beautiful with the ribbon backdrop they designed. Each guest's seat had a cute paper cone filled with dozens of yarn balls to toss at the newlyweds as they made their way back down the aisle!

Real Wedding: Liz & Rich Part I

I can't say enough about these two. Darling, incredibly kind hearted, overly creative, and just plain wonderful. Liz and Rich's wedding day reflected all these things and more.

The wedding was held at The Darlington House in La Jolla, Calif. It was a brilliantly perfect afternoon wedding, and I must say...so much FUN! Enjoy the fabulous photos by He & She Photography.

Hannah at Modern Bouquet did a stunning job on all the flowers!

The bridesmaids all carried heart shaped balloons. I loved this idea, and thought it was a creative way to save some money on bouquets! It also tied in Liz and Rich's engagement session...and the UP, UP, UP and Away theme!!!

Oh HEY! Dance party pre ceremony...that's what I'm talking about!

We prayed for sun, and it was a wonderful, sunny warm afternoon. Just as the guests lined the streets with the waving ribbon wands, the newlyweds darted from the huge wet rain drops. Talk about perfect timing! It was amazing! The getaway outfits were adorable...

We had the chance to work with incredible vendors. Each of them is fantastic, and a joy to work alongside.

It was one of those days...one of those moments you think will never happen to you, but then it does and leaves you a bit speechless, in the teary-eyed, really amazing kind of way.

It happened! We are published in a real magazine. Not only any magazine, but Exquisite Weddings Magazine. The thick pages are filled one by one with beautiful and stunning images...and then you get to page 116 and see a tablescape done by us, Carter & Cook Event Co.

I received a call from Alyssa back in the beginning of December, asking if we were interested in designing a tablescape for the Spring 2010 issue. I gasped, held back a few tears of excitement, and quickly said YES!

The shoot was in three weeks and if you know much at all about designing a shoot, that is FAST. We quickly pulled together a team of incredible vendors: My Sweet and Saucy Shop, The Floral Lab, and Love At First Invite , who carried the vision and theme throughout the shoot two days before Christmas.

For some, this may not be any goal to have in life, but when you're new to the industry and working hard to grow your company, little blessings such as this goes a long way. Yesterday we were published in a magazine, and Lord, you are so very good!!

Utterly Engaged: Designers Challenge

In January we had the privilege to attend an industry event put on by the fabulous ladies from Utterly Engaged. The Utterly Spankin' New Year party was quite the hit! We were able to meet and hug so many of the faces we've seen only through the computer screen and twitter conversations. It was a wonderful evening and we met so many new friends.

Carter & Cook, along with Posh Paperie decided to enter the designers challenge. There were many rules to our table entry. It had to be a form of 'modern', and use some sort of industrial material, paper, or fabric. We chose to focus our table on Modern Craft and the use of all things paper, with a bistro flare! We didn't win the challenge, but did receive an Editors Choice award in the recent issue. Such FUN! Read about it in the latest issue of UE here.

To keep the look clean and simple, we used a table with all neutrals, whites, creams, and browns. The table's main focus and centerpiece was not supposed be flowers so we found very simple cream vases from Ikea with three large white peony blooms, and lots of paper flowers made out of old books. All white china, and white utensils, along with a cream dish cloth for napkins.

Paper was used in so many ways! The table runner was brown craft paper, laid over a white linen tablecloth [yes, we need a hand held steamer! :) ]. We decided to do beer with cheese and bread baskets, so we had brown paper boxes lined with parchment paper to fill with gourmet cheeses and breads.

The beers had darling custom labels that served as place cards, also created by Posh Paperie. Our paper bag styled menu fit our modern bistro spread.

The paper flowers were a definite DIY, and quite easy. I might be putting together a tutorial for those, so watch for that on the Utterly Engaged blog.

The candles were all wrapped in various forms and textures of vellum, paper lace doilies, and a cream paper mache. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the glow from your candles through the textures of paper is so beautiful and soft. This is an affordable way to jazz up your standard glass pillar candles.

My favorite part about the table was the front of the linen. We saw an art piece online, and decided to try to incorporate that into our tablescape. We used dozens of sizes of paper cupcake liners, to create a fun design along the front of the table linen. We secured them with silver push pins. Several of the cupcake liners were spray painted tan to give a pop against the linen.

DIY Projects: Button Brunch!

As we wrap up the fun shoot we did with Wedding Chicks, I thought it would be fun to highlight the few DIY projects that happened to create some of the fun details for the tablescape.

The button garland was certainly a labor of love, but worth every minute of it. It's hard to envision this garland simply by the photos alone. In person, the button garland really made the space fun and unique!

We ordered lots of various buttons off etsy, and found several others at Michael's. We bought a larger yellow spool of thread used for quilting, and got to threading one button at a time. The tricky to part to this is making sure the garland doesn't get tangled up in a mess!

We made several strands of garland with the various colors and shapes of buttons. Make sure you have a beam, or some sort of overhang to tie your garland to. We decided to swoop it in various heights and layers over our table.

The 'favors' for this brunch were individual recipe boxes. We found plain wooden boxes at Michael's, and wrapped the yellow string around it several times, attached a few of the buttons on all sides of the box, and of course a darling Ink and Button fascinator to finish the touch. We also used them as a place card at each guests seat.

The table linens were hand made. We always have the hardest time finding just the right fabric for our tables. We found the delicate and girly floral printed fabric at Joann's, as well as the very fine stripped tangerine and cream linen, which was turned into the table runner.

The floral overlay fit just perfectly, and to add a fun touch, we sewed a cream fringe around the entire border of the linen. The table runner was hand sewn, and on the ends of the runner we glued {because it's just way faster} dozens and dozens of the buttons to tie in our theme.

A Brunch Inspired Engagement Shoot.

This is the first time we've ever used models for a shoot, and I must say, it added a whole new dimension. It was fun and really brought life to our ideas! Amy from the Wedding Chicks wanted us to design an engagement shoot inspired by our button brunch.

Katie and her hubby Ryan have been married for a few years, and their love for one another certainly showed in their photos. They were comfortable with each other and just plain cute!

We wanted our 'bride' Katie to wear a dress we found at Anthropologie. It had tangerine polka dots and a fun bright belt that tie in the colors we used earlier at the brunch shoot. We ordered a fun bow tie off etsy, but it didn't arrive in time! So the night before Heather whipped up a handmade bow tie with the extra material from our table runner. It was really perfect, and I am so proud of her....and thankful she's on my team for mad skills like that. ;)

Katie wore an Ink and Button hair piece, that was attached to her recipe box favor earlier that morning!

The shoot was set with a few different sheets for blankets and color, two of the bistro chairs we had used earlier, an old wood box, a cookbook and lots of fun baking supplies! The Floral Lab designed a fabulous bouquet made up of bright yellow acacia for Katie to hold. It was seriously fabulous! We wrapped the button garland around the bouquet to show those fun buttons!

This shoot is perfect for the little homemaker to be. Erica O'Brien baked us up some adorable colorful sugar cookies shaped like buttons.

Note to brides: When styling your engagement shoot, first, come up with a theme. Your outfits should reflect your theme and the colors. Bright colors always photograph nicely, and bring life into the photos.

Fun objects such as a clock, cookies, a handmade bouquet, furniture or even a fun and unique setting will make those photos pop! But best of all, you will have pictures of you and your love that you will cherish forever.

Bridesmaid Brunch [inspired by yellow and buttons!]

Amy from the Wedding Chicks was looking for someone to design a bridesmaid brunch photo shoot for a Wedding Chicks blog feature on bridal shower ideas. We quickly jumped at the opportunity! Why? Because we love The Wedding Chicks, and we had been dreaming up brunch ideas for some time now.

The team we were able to work with was truly incredible. First off, we had the chance to meet, and have the table shot by the amazing Jessica Claire. She is a hilarious, sweet girl who had us laughing the entire day...and her work is amazing!! Thank you Jessica for the beautiful images. You are the best! Jessica is actually the brain that came up with the two words, yellow and buttons, that inspired this entire shoot!

The Floral Lab....sigh. We love Leigh Anne. If you need a florist, she is your gal. Her ideas, creativity and talent are inspiring, and every time we work with her, she pulls our vision together seamlessly. She used kumquats!? I die...

Paper and Thread did all the paper: the invitation, the place cards, menus, recipes, and the Cute as a Button sign. Lori is the sweetest. She is not only creative and has a talent to match, but she is just so fun and kind! She was willing to go above and beyond her duty with the darling paper suite, and help Heather and me with any of the other crafty projects. Lori, thank you!!

Erica O'Brien pulled through with 5 knock-you-off-your-feet cakes. They were beautiful! She also made the adorable button sugar cookies for the engagement shoot that afternoon. Erica is insanely talented and if you need a cake that screams perfection, hire Erica.

Those buttons are fake. Yep, it's all fondant. Can we say, awesome?!

Did you notice those incredibly perfect felt flower pieces on our recipe boxes? Or the one our adorable 'bride' Katie wore in the esession shoot? Those lovelies were by one of our former brides Lisa Raser, creator of Ink and Button. We love our brides, and we love when they turn their passion and talent into something beautiful! Lisa, thank you again!!! Those were quite the hit!

The photo shoot was held at Cafe Mimosa in San Clemente. They were so kind to let us set up before the restaurant opened and hang hundreds of buttons from their ceiling. By the way, the mimosas are bomb!

Thank you Classic Party Rentals for the cute bistro chairs! The stemware and mugs were from Anthropologie and our cute shabby chic plates were from TJ Maxx at $4 a piece!

Real Wedding: Brooke & Nathan

Remember this good looking couple? Well, they tied the knot!! Brooke and Nathan had a beautiful wedding at the North Chapel in Liberty Station January 17th. The chapel was filled to the brim with over 350 family members, friends and people who truly love this couple. It was such a beautiful wedding, and so refreshing to see a couple who deeply loves one another and the people that are a special part of their lives.

The black and white wedding was elegant, classy and had so many natural and organic elements. The use of eucalyptus, china mums, and mini eggplant colored calla lillies were perfect. Their reception was held at the Admiral Kidd Club which over looked the bay, and downtown San Diego. Thank you to Aquario Studio Photography for the lovely photos!

We are excited to share with you a simply sweet engagement session today, done by some of the coolest photographers around, He & She Photography. We will be working with this talented team again on Liz and Rich's wedding, which is less than a month away!

We met with the beautiful bride to be Liz this weekend and enjoyed discussing all the details to their upcoming wedding. The wedding theme is "Up, Up and Away"....and each of them have come up with some outrageously creative ideas! We are so excited for their wedding! It is going to be fun!

The photo above is one of my favorites! Liz, you're stunning. I love the use of these pale pink heart balloons, and they will also be tied into parts of their wedding day. How fun are those?!

Coral & Shimmer [nonpareil magazine] Part Deux

We're back to round up the details from our tablescape photo shoot for Nonpareil Magazine. This was an extremely fun project, as we worked on creating something beautiful, yet affordable for most brides!

Karrie & Elizabeth are the two behind Posh Paperie. These girls always amaze us with creativity and attention to detail through paper. We were excited to see their paper quilling skills when it came to this shoot. We tried to incorporate the round movement through paper in different ways.

Here is a little DIY tutorial for your very own quilled lettering, which can be a creative touch to any piece of the wedding! I loved the framed monogram and cookie banner they came up with.

You will need: a pencil, strips of paper cut 1" thick and glue dots.

First, determine what word you want to spell out. For each letter, use a strip of paper for each stroke you need to form the letter. Wrap the edges of each strip tightly around a pencil to curl it and shape the rest of the strop to form the letter. To attach the strop to the surface, use a glue dot as needed!

Dessert bars are still awesome. In 2010, I think we're going to see many twists on your standard dessert bar. Friends, meet the DIY Cookie Bar. Often times we get many brides who don't love cake. We encourage our brides to do things they love, and reflect their own taste. And this bride is a cookie lover.

With a handful of family recipes, she got her family to baking and we created a mini cookie bar. We covered pieces of wood in the fabrics to match our colors, theme, and the lampshades. We placed them on top of large candlestick holders to create various heights. The finish, stack the mini cookies inside gold foiled cupcake liners. Don't forget the milk! Serve ice cold milk in non-traditional old bottles with mini glasses.

If you don't want to bake these yourself, ask your caterer or hire a baker to make homemade cookies of your choice, and see if they can even serve them warm!

Coral & Shimmer [nonpareil magazine] Shoot 1.

We are so excited to finally be able to share more of the fun details that we have been working on since November. Our concept for this tablescape shoot was bold, colorful, and creative while using a variety of gold and shimmery tones. Coral and gold look simply incredible together, and it is something fresh and new that hasn't been overdone. There was a photo I saw of a coffee shop in New Zealand that had lots of lamps hanging upside down on their lamp stand. It was then that I had an "ah-ha!" moment, and thought it might be pretty fun to find different shapes of old lamps, cover them with fun fabric and hang above a wedding table! So, the Coral & Shimmer table was born, with so much help from our fabulous team of vendors.

Leigh Anne from The Floral Lab pulled through and found us the perfect coral peonies for the shoot. I am totally in love with them and really think they make such a dramatic impact on any table. Yes, they are pricey, but as we mention in the article, you only need a few stems to make a big impact on any table. Leigh Anne also sprayed several pieces of the foliage gold, which matches perfectly with the table. Another DIY trick to fancy up your standard greenery and give the centerpiece an antique finish.

These lampshades were a vision that came to life! All you need is your trusty glue gun, ribbon, various old lampshades, spray paint and fabric of your choice to create your mini lamp chandelier. We found our fabrics online from various Etsy sellers, and the lampshades were all found at Pat's Corner for $1.00 a piece! Such a fun bargain.

DIY Lampshade Chandelier:

step 1. Lay your fabric out, and measure the amount you will need for each shade. Don't worry about getting it too exact - you can always, trim, tuck and fold and glue the extra underneath.

step 2. Use your hot clue gun to secure the fabric on one side and wrap it around the shade. The larger, more symmetrical shade you have, the easier it will be. Make sure that it looks "pretty" from underneath, as your guests will be able to see the inside if these are used as a chandelier.

step 3. Spray painting a few of the lampshades is quite easy, and much quicker! It adds some simplicity if the fabric you use is a little busier.

step 4. Once done and dry, tie the inside tops of each shade with ribbon and hang from a ceiling, overhang, tree, or any area in which you can secure these pretties over your table. It is such a fun way to bring a homey feel outside! I also think this would be darling at a bridal shower, or a fun party.

We were so excited this past fall when we were approached by the two ever so talented ladies, Maddy from Inspired Bride and Kristen from Paper Crave, to design a tablescape shoot for their new upcoming and top secret project, Nonpareil Magazine. The online magazine officially launches today. The first issue, Beautiful on a Budget, caters to the DIY bride, with fun tutorials, and ways to class up your wedding, for less! We are so excited to see our Shimmer & Shine shoot in all it's glory. It is such a privilege and we are completely ecstatic to be a part of the very beginning for Nonpareil, and wish you only the best with this new endeavor.

We met these two one evening at Starbucks, and right away just knew we had to work with them. I'm not sure if they felt that way about Heather and I, but we adored them from the start. Brad and Julie are simply adorable, and their love is so sweet. They had shared how completely opposite they are from one another, but any one who spends a moment of time with them can see just how perfect they fit as one. Don't you just love long weekends? We sure do. Both Heather and I also love travel and fun getaways. So what's even better is a long weekend+valentines day+a lovely little getaway! Here are a few trips to consider over the long holiday weekend - sure enough to fit the mood for anyone.

Grab your hunny and head for the sun. The Palm Springs Ace Hotel is the ultra hip, happening place. According to the Los Angeles Times, The Ace is, "a fun, affordable retreat that is a bit urban, a bit like a camp-out.” Sounds like a fun time!

Most of us could use some R&R with our loved one. Nothing more perfect than a drive up highway 101 towards northern California - where the trees meet the coast. A darling little quaint town tucked off the beaten path, you'll find Cambria. No better a place to stay then one of the dozens of adorable bed and breakfasts. Take a hike, spend time reading a new book, and a candle light dinner is in order once your reach your destination!

If you're ready for an adventure, pack those bags, find an inexpensive flight on Travel Zoo and head for Sandpoint, Idaho! There you will find one of the most gorgeous mountain villages in the world. Sweitzer Mountain is the Switzerland of the states. Breathtaking scenery with lots of snow! Bundle up with your snow bunny and hit the slopes or sit in the lodge fireside sipping hot cocoa.

If it's too much to leave town, stay local! We are so blessed by the abundance of completely awesome hotels here in California. San Diego has many boutique hotels, and some for a great price! We've fallen in love with the L'Auberge hotel in Del Mar. This is an ideal spa and vacation destination for anyone around the world! So if you're local, take advantage of all that we have to offer here! The hotel is laid back and elegant, with that southern California beach charm. Sit on the patio and enjoy cocktails at sunset.

Engaged: Brooke & Nathan

2009: You Were Good!

It’s somewhat hard for us to say goodbye to 2009 because really, it was such a wonderful and blessed year full of so much JOY. 2009 was a year for the books. Not only because it was our first official year as Carter & Cook, but because we were surrounded by so much love and so many incredible people. All of the couples & families we had the privilege to know in 2009 and all the incredible & creative vendors we worked alongside have inspired us in such great ways that make us even more EXCITED for what’s to come. We’re looking forward to continuing our journey as we grow, develop and make new leaps towards our goals for 2010.

There are several new and exciting projects that we are beyond excited to share with you in the next few months. So cheers to 2010 - a fresh year, lots of creativity and new friends we get to meet along the way.

Hot Trend: The Bundt

Goodbye cupcakes, helllllo bundt cake! Nothing makes us happier than mixing things up, doing something fun and different. One of our very creative 2010 brides-to-be informed us that she will be using a variety bundt cakes at the wedding reception.

This might immediately take you back to the scene of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but stop your thoughts there! Nothing Budnt Cake is taking the old school version of 'budnt' to a whole new level! Nothing Budnt Cake now has two locations in San Diego {Scripps Ranch & Del Mar} along with ten other shops across the country.

After hearing about this new craze, I couldn't wait to taste one for myself! Pumpkin Spice, Red Velvet and White Chocolate Raspberry made the grand appearance to a recent party I helped host.

These simple little cakes were outofthisworld incredible! Seriously, some of the best cake I have ever tasted. And we taste a lot of cake! Not only does it taste amazing, but would make a killer dessert station for your guests with a variety of flavors, and the price is RIGHT. Sizes range from baby bundlets to large tiered cakes. The 10" cakes serve approx. 18 people, which rounds out to $1.50 a slice. Such a bargain!

Real Wedding: Kate + Daniel vol. 2

Now for the details! Kate + Daniel's reception was held at The Thursday Club in Point Loma, a charming little Spanish house with 180 degree views of the ocean.

The escort cards were strung across old white shutters {found at a local thrift shop} by twine and close pins. As you walked into the house, you were greeted by a table full of various colors of mums wrapped in burlap. It was such a sweet touch an the guests loved being able to take home their very own mum! Such a great idea for a favor that will be a lasting memory!

We took all the lavender potted plants that were at the ceremony and moved them to The Thursday Club. You can see them in the background below. It was a great way to re-use something from the ceremony, and it made a big impact at the reception site.

The tables were covered in gray linen and each centerpiece held a variety of vintage, wildflower looking florals in old various glass. The Floral Lab did a fabulous job pulling together the theme.

The dessert bar was a labor of love. The bride's grandmother made her famous chocolate chip cookies that were quite the hit, and a friend who is a baker made the red velvet and carrot cake cupcakes. Azucar, a local bakery in San Diego, made a darling two-tier chocolate cake for the bride and groom to cut, and had wonderful lemon bars.

Our favorite part of the dessert bar was the old vintage doors that created the space. They were rented from a local antique store for $30, and that included delivery and pick up! It was so very charming!

As the guests left, they grabbed handfuls of lavender to toss at the newlyweds. I loved the story behind tossing lavender, and the smell was incredible! You can read about the fun tradition here.

This wedding was so much fun. We worked with an incredible team of vendors, and at the end of the day, left smiling and feeling grateful for the opportunity to work with Kate + Daniel. The love in that room was extraordinary, on so many levels, and for that we felt blessed.

K+D, we already miss meeting with you {and you, Jan!} over a cup of coffee, but we know your lives are going to be so blessed and full. We wish you the best in years to come!

Real Wedding: Kate + Daniel vol. 1

This wedding was one of our favorite weddings to date. Kate and Daniel, their families, the vendors, the ceremony and reception sites, the theme - everything combined made for a perfect and beautiful day. We love fall weddings, and we loved working with these two to create a vintage, 'anthropologie' wedding day.

This wedding is so jam packed with goodness. We're going to have to unfold the photos in two volumes, so make sure you stop back for more tomorrow!

Kate was just the most gorgeous bride in her Mikaella lace wedding gown. Here is a series of photos from their first look. As Heather and I were busy running around with the details, Erin and Randy from He & She Photography were able to capture the precious first look. I love this quote from He & She's blog, "Kate & Daniel were so calm before the ceremony. I would almost consider their portrait session beforehand to be a "holy moment" - it was so peaceful and quiet. It was just one of those right moments that was so very memorable." How perfect, and sweet and really an exact picture how the entire day went!

The wedding ceremony was held at McCullough Park at Point Loma Nazarene University, where the two met and fell in love. Old benches were found and painted white, and were lined with lavender plants covered in burlap. It was a darling touch!

Posh Paperie was once again, the creative minds behind the oh-so-darling invitations!

These were the cutest bridesmaid dresses that we've ever laid eyes on. JCrew did it again - and these darling girls wore them well! The dusty/lilacy-pink and shades of gray and cream set the palette for the rest of the wedding.

Okay...look at those flowers. Can we say WOW?! Leigh Anne at The Floral Lab designed all the flowers for the wedding, minus the potted plants done by the wonderful MOB, Jan.

Daniel is an extremely talented musician, and of course, wrote all the ceremony music, which was played by a trio of wonderful musician friends. It was a very sweet and personal touch to the ceremony.

Year One: Full of Thanks.

In honor of the week of Thanksgiving, and the one year anniversary of our very first {official} wedding, we wanted to take a moment to stop, and give thanks for our many blessings. Carter & Cook has come a long way in the last year. We have celebrated so many beautiful weddings, experienced touching moments with our couples, and have had too many good laughs as we began this journey and incredible adventure into Carter & Cook Event Co. Today, we could not be more thankful for where the last year has brought us. God is good and His blessings are beyond what we dreamt.

Real Wedding: Jesse + Sheila Ross

Jesse + Sheila are one of the sweetest, kind hearted couples we've been able to work with. Sheila and her mom Liz did a fabulous job in designing the 'bird of paradise' inspired wedding. The wedding was held on the rooftop at La Jolla Cove and Suites, and the view did not disappoint! Turquoise and splashes of orange were found throughout the entire wedding, complementing her tropical theme and vision.

The reception was truly rockin' with live music by The Heros, which were amazing! The dance floor was never empty. We love when the groom gets involved and parts of the day reflect him. Jesse LOVES Phil's BBQ (Who doesn't...right?) so Phil's agreed to do their first ever plated meal. They did a great job, and the food was enjoyed by all! We loved seeing the bride enjoy her ribs! :)
Jesse and Sheila, thank you for allowing us to be involved and help coordinate your amazing day! We know you two will have an incredible and blessed marriage!

Fall Inspiration: Seeded Eucalyptus

There is something incredibly charming about seeded eucalyptus. A common "foliage" filler you can find year round, "seeded euc" is rustic, beautiful, adds great texture and is quite fall-ish! I recently bought a whole bundle of seeded euc at Wholesale Flowers and Supplies for $6! I found it in the most lovely shade of a plum purple. You can also find it many times in the more common silver dollar eucalyptus green color, burgundy or even chartreuse! There are a wide variety of shades and colors that look spectacular in any arrangement of flowers, or even your holiday decor! The fragrance is absolutely incredible and will leave your home smelling fresh and fall-like for several days. [Happy Fall!]

Why should I hire an event planner?

A commonly asked question we know that every bride asks, or even just ponders is,"Why should I hire and event planner?" I'm creative....I already know what I want...I've had lots of parties before....I helped with my best friend and sister's weddings....I can't afford it...the list goes on!Today we were asked by an editor at Exquisite Weddings Magazine, what are the top reasons we think why it is important to hire a coordinator, so I thought we might just share with our readers a few of the things we expressed to them...

You don’t know, what you don’t know. Often times, by the time you figure out the answers to those questions, it is too late. The money has been spent and the contract has been signed.
Have you ever hosted 20-40 people at your home for a dinner party? Try to imagine how it would feel hosting 100, 150, or 250+ and you are the main attraction! How are you going to be the Star and still run around demanding when you want the bread and butter to arrive and let the DJ know when to start the first dance? IT'S NOT THE APPROPRIATE PLACE TO DO THAT! You are there to enjoy your day and be with your guests.
Family matters. Dealing with your family that day is chaotic and managing them that day is a full time job. It is important to have someone there as a mutual third party that can be that person to bounce ideas off and help you stay calm and do things in a orderly manner.
We are your ally and advocate. Another important piece a wedding coordinator can offer you is that they act as your advocate. The WC {wedding coordinator} will motivate and manage all the vendor teams. That day we manage nearly sixty people who are assisting with that day.
Money talks. Money is stressful. You have a budget and think, “well, I can work with that amount." But then you find the perfect dress which is $1,000 more than expected. A WC will help you stick with your budget. A couple may say, “well, its only $100 more." But if you do that multiple times, it adds up. The money you spend with a coordinator will more than make up the amount they help you save, and because of their relationships with vendors, a WC can get you better deals in a variety of ways.
The home stretch. The last week, the list of details is huge. There is a lot to accomplish that week and the last thing anyone would want is to have their friends and families running around stressed. The last week or more, everything should be communicated through the WC to avoid frustration and pointless questions.
And lastly, having a planner on board allows you to slow down and take a deep breath and truly enjoy the process of planning your wedding!

You might remember our Sweet as a Peach tablescape? Those sweet 'lil pinwheels were thought up by none other than those so creative Posh Paperie ladies, Karrie + Elizabeth. Style Me Pretty requested a DIY post...and here is what they came up with! Photos by the talented Jackie Wonders.

These little lovelies are a great addition to any event!!

[DIY Pinwheels] - as seen here today on Style Me Pretty!

Step #1: Supplies.

Pick your paper and buttons. *Hint*: text weight paper works best. Choosing coordinating patterns and colors for the paper is fun, and choosing different sizes and shapes in the buttons is cute, too. Choose scissors or a paper cutter, and adhesive. Cut 2 strips of paper, equal length and width, depending on the size of the pinwheel you want (thicker strips = larger pinwheel).

Steps #2 and #3: Folding + Combining.

Evenly fold (like an accordion) the 2 strips of paper. Make sure the widths match! (Note: smaller folds make tighter pinwheels. Larger folds are more loose and show more of the pattern. We like to make several of each size – makes for an adorable display). Line up one end of the folded accordion with the end of the other accordion. Fit together and adhere securely. Permanent adhesive squares work nicely, and lie flat.

Step #4: Securing.

Pull the loose ends of the accordion strip around towards each other and adhere securely. The pinwheel will look like a cardstock “circle” (similar to the coffee sleeves they give you at Starbucks). You will need to pop the pinwheel out and push it down (work with it until it looks like a pinwheel should look), holding it in place with your fingers. In the photo, the paperweight is doing the job of holding the pinwheel in place.

Step #5: Finishing Touches.

Choose your button and secure *tightly* with glue dots (you may need to use several!). Note: we recommend weighing the pinwheels down for several hours once they are fully assembled). This will help to ensure that they are secure.

Last week we had the honor of working with our gals over at Posh Paperie to create a fun holiday event featuring their new line of Christmas cards! The event was held at Wine Steals in Point Loma, and we truly had a wonderful time! Below are just a few photos and preview from Julie Dent of Journey of the Lens. [Out of the Box] theme was holiday inspired to create "out of the box" thinking, ideas and fun for the upcoming holiday season! We designed a warm tablescape that featured florals from The Floral Lab. Our dear friend Melody from Sweet and Saucy Shop highlighted her goodies on a beautiful dessert table!

C&C Wedding Tablescapes

I know these pictures have already been posted on Style Me Pretty, but I wanted to share a bit more details about this shoot.

Our first table was inspired by peaches. Peach is such a cool color. Word on the street is that Peach is the new pink. ;) This table is catered to the bride who loves the soft romantic fee. Peach, creams and other complimentary shades complimented this tablescape. What I love most is the way the table pulled together. The textures and colors fit perfectly. The peach place mats, café ole dahlias and pinwheels completely seal the look. Hydrangeas and dusty miller with scattered peaches played into the soft, natural vibe. Definitely the favorite!

Our next table turned out incredible. The way the jewel tones popped against the natural backdrop was perfect. Raspberry and greens were the color scheme, while accenting hints of vintage antiques. It was definitely bold and beautiful, but still very classic. The shutter down the center of the table was used as a focal point for all the old green vintage depression glass. The glass was filled with amazing, bright shades of flowers which added to incredible color. We used adorable floral printed napkins found at Pier One.

We seriously have to give most of the credit to Sean and Brianne from Sean Walker Photography. He has such great skills to make these tables look fantastic. Karrie and Elizabeth at Posh Paperie were amazing and put together some killer pieces. Those pinwheels were NOT easy. And Robin from Red Floral Designs did an incredible spread of flowers and knew just the look we were going for on both tables. Thank you all for helping us pull off this vision – it is so rewarding to see it done.

In honor of my favorite season Fall, I thought it would be appropriate to share one of Stephanie Fay's weddings she shot recently in beautiful Idaho which took place near apple orchards. Typically we don't post other weddings, but I literally gasped when I saw the shoot. The bride had incredible taste and my favorite part about the wedding details was that her brother built the outdoor structure to give off a chapel like feel. I love the use of colors against the natural backdrop. Stunning!

Stephanie's gift for photography is beyond amazing, and only a few years upon entering the photography world she has left her mark, and in a h.u.g.e way. I may be a bit bias, because she was my (ashlyn) wedding photographer, but she is also a dear friend who comes with incredible talent.

I had to share these {adorable} invitations that one of our fall brides shared with us the other day. She sent over the invitation suite designed by her very own sister. Immediately, I fell in love with the map and had to share! Alicia and Dev will be married this September in La Jolla, Ca. Alicia has incorporate her southern roots into so many details of the wedding, yet it will surely have a "Cali" feel being nestled in the La Jolla cove. Dev and Alicia's photographer, Collin Richie, captured their engagement photos in New Orleans, which is a where they were engaged last fall.

Antique Shopping Secrets

One afternoon last week, I was out shopping for some fun pieces for a project we're working on. I decided to slip in the local antique shops found in Ocean Beach. There were some amazing finds! As you know, the ever so popular "vintage" theme incorporated in weddings is huge. Whether it be hobnob glass vases, chandeliers, chalkboards, vintage signs....the details are endless!

After browsing around for a bit, and noticing the high priced sales tag on many of the beautiful depression glass vases, I had an idea. I asked the woman at the front desk if she would be willing to sell the items to me, and after use I could sell them back to the shop? That's when she dropped the hint that I think you all should know. {Vendors, brides, party planners alike!} You can rent pieces from the antique store.....for 20% of the price!! I can't claim that all antique stores do this, but if you're looking for some fun pieces for your tables at the wedding, a photo shoot or fun event, I highly suggest checking this out. It may be a great bargain, and a simply wonderful added detail!

Real Wedding: Lauren & Joel Day

Our pigeon inspired bride and groom. Meet Lauren and Joel, the new Mr. and Mrs. Day. This couple is nothing short of fabulous and was one of our favorite weddings to date.

With the theme vintage, pigeons, and using all sorts of blues, what more could you ask for? A lovely summer's night at The Darlington House in La Jolla, Ca - these two love birds tied the knot! We couldn't help but hold back the tears as the pastor shared their incredibly sweet love story. The way Joel looks at Lauren is quite breathtaking, and you know without a doubt these two are perfect for one another.

The wonderful evening wedding reception included the most delicious dessert bar! They had a fun, DIY vintage Polaroid photo station, and served ice cold Izze soda's with straws.

Lauren and Joel, we are so grateful to have been a part of your day. Your kindness and love is so appreciated by everyone around you. You have the most wonderful family and friends! We wish you two the best!!

Our Pigeon Inspired Wedding.

It wasn't a 'love at first sight' kind of story you would find in a fairytale book, but it most surely is now. Seeing the groom watch his bride walk down the aisle was nothing less than pure, sweet love. Somewhat like the pigeons. Now we all know pigeons to be a bit boring, messy and certainly not beautiful. But something very beautiful and honorable about a pigeon that most of us do not know, is that they mate for life.

Wiki Answers.com "Birds known to form long-term pair bonds that may last a lifetime include swans, geese, most hawks, eagles and falcons, most parrots, albatrosses, ravens, pigeons and doves, and more..."

And, while the couple was thousands of miles apart, it was pigeons that reminded them of each others love. Therefore, we decided what better a symbol, unique to them as a couple, than two sweet pigeons. Vintage, midnight blue pigeons of course.

Real Wedding: Kate + Kris Evans!

Kate and Kris were married in beautiful Point Loma, Ca. The wedding was nothing less of elegant and timeless - quite like where the darling couple both met. Kris was born and raised in England and met Kate while she was in school studying abroad. The two fell in love and haven't been apart since! The reception was held at the San Diego Yacht Club, which was the perfect location for the elegant black and white affair. My favorite detail was the piper that escorted the newlyweds and family into the reception! Creative touch! Kate + Kris, we thank you so much for allowing us to participate in your day! We wish you two the best of luck!

The start of something good.

I think it was about 7:43 a.m. one spring morning drive. We were on our way to work and that is when our idea was born. The Carter & Cook "project" began. Two girls, one same vision...and so the process started.

Fast forward 10 months and we sit here today, oh-so ready, overly excited and eager to welcome into the world, {Carter & Cook Event Company}!

We are thrilled to share our events, weddings, couples and creativity with you all and hope that you will join us in our venture into what it means to start your own business.
